Hipsy's View: Merry Christmas 2010

Hey everyone, just dropping a line to wish you all a Merry, MERRY Christmas and a Happy New Year. Coming to the end of another year, and just beginning a new year in my life (I just recently turned 21), I realized how many things I have seen in such little time. I know I've started this blog to be a somewhat freelance, unemployed critic, but I'd like now to share with you some of the things I have seen.

I'm young, and I still have more to learn about, but I have seen so much all ready; you, my readers, may even shared these experiences (even more than me).

A year after I was born, the Berlin Wall came down. When I was seven, the world was shocked by JonBonet Ramsey's death. After I was ten, I saw that world didn't change into a "Jetsons" episode with flying cars and maid robots in 2000. But three months before my 12th birthday, it did feel for moment as though the world was coming to an end as I watched along with my classmates the Twin Towers fall during 9/11. As I got into high school, I changed from the tomboy to the quiet loner-with-friends. And now, I am 21-year-old Hispanic/Caucasian girl who almost has an AA, and who has yet still to see the real world.

This past year has been difficult for my family and I, but as we come to the end of another year, I have a feeling this next year holds something better for us. I pray your future in the next year will be just as grand. Again, Merry Christmas, everyone. May your holidays be as wonderful as mine have been so far.

Hipsy's View: Oeipus the King

In my World Literature class, we are required to write an interact for each reading we discuss in class. By this, I mean that we the students are read our assignments, discuss them in class, and then give our opinion on the readings. One that I did earlier this year was on Sophocles Oedipus the King. I thought it would be interesting for you all to read it; it kinda makes think. Hope you enjoy it.

Oedipus: Was It Fate or Ignorance?
Many of us know the story of Oedipus: as a younger man, he killed his father and married his mother, not knowing his true identity or that he fulfilled the prophecy the Lord of Apollo in Delphi told him. When he found out the truth, he dug out his eyes with his dead mother-wife’s dress pins, saying he did not deserve to see since all the once beautiful things he knew were gone with the truth revealed. But one must wonder if it was fate that caused this happened to Oedipus or if it was his own ignorance that caused his ill fortune.
This is a very strong, debatable conversation. One like this can possibly lead to someone’s faith. Are we set on a path that leads us to our fate, be it good or bad? Or are we in control of our own life and can we make our own path by the choices we make? What if it’s both? If we look closer to the story of Oedipus, we learn from not one, but three oracles that Oedipus was destined to kill his father and lay with his mother; to the oracles, this was the will of the gods. When Oedipus tries to escape his fate, he instead runs straight into the path the gods set for him. Then, being ignorant and not thinking before he speaks, he sets his own destiny of exile and hardship while charging the late King Liaus’ murderer before finding him.
So, many could say Oedipus set his own path. Or that whether he tried to escape it or not, he had a set path ahead of him that he was meant to take. I believe both of these statements are true: Oedipus had a set path and it evolved in time with the decisions he had made. What I’m trying to say is whether we think it or not, our decisions coincide with the path all ready set for us, and together, the path and the decisions shows a future we must face, be it great or horrible.

Hipsy's View: Lee Safar

If none of you have heard of this singer, I advise you to listen to her music. Though I have not had the pleasure of meeting her face-to-face, I have somewhat worked with Lee Safar. She is an Australian songwriter and musician who is doing well for herself. Now if any of you enjoy inspirational and rock ballads, I would advice you to take some time and listen to Lee's music.

I first heard of Lee through a Facebook Twilight Blog (yes, I said Twilight, so what if I like the Saga :P) posted by her producer Stuart. Stuart asking Twilight fans to give Lee's music a listen because she was interested in having one or two of her songs on the New Moon soundtrack. A few of us, on our own, did our best to promote her music by putting links to her websites to our blogs, social networks, and even to our Youtube channels. Though we did our best to help, her music was not featured in the soundtrack. But we still enjoyed her music.

During that time, I had the pleasure of talking to Lee. She had told me how she had postponed her music after high school, and how she got back into it after speaking to an old friend who asked her how her music career was going. That's when she noticed she wanted to get back into writing and singing her songs. If you want to know more about her, go to one of her links posted below.

From the last time I had talked to Lee, she has done quite well for herself. She also has her own blogspot if you would like to look at it. It's http://www.leesafar.blogspot.com/.

To end this blog, I would like to leave a message for Lee. From those of us that have supported you since we first heard of you Lee, we congratulate you on your success and hope nothing but the best for you. And though we have not officially met each other yet, I would consider a good friend and I thank you for the advice that have given me so far. May you prosper in all your dreams.
Your friend and fan,
Sky
This video features her song Sweet Angel. Enjoy!

Hipsy's View: Happy Halloween

Hello, my frightful ghouls and ghosts.
I'm mostly writing this blog to say Happy Halloween. Now "All Hallow's Eve" is a very popular holiday. In fact, it's the second most popular holiday known in the world, the first being Christmas. Many celebrate the holiday by dressing up (originally to scare off evil spirits), trick-or-treating (usually done by the poor who could not afford to buy a meal; in return, the poor would give the giving family a prayer to protect their home), and enjoying ourselves by going to parties, watching our favorite scary movies, and reading our favorite eerie poems and novels. Some of us have either all ready celebrated Halloween last night (on Devil's Night) or plan to do so tonight. I for one will be continuing my Halloween by reading Bram Stocker's Dracula, watching A Nightmare before Christmas, and just spend time with my family.

So to end this blog, I am hoping you all enjoy yourselves. Read Edgar Allan Poe's The Raven and The Tell-Tale Heart, watch your favorite classic horror film, and have fun dressing up as a vampire, a zombie, a ghost, a princess, WHATEVER you want to be. Have fun and stay safe tonight.
Happy Halloween!!!!!

Hipsy's View: Shane Dawson's video on Bullying and Suicide

I know that I don't have that many followers yet, and you may not read this until like 5 months later, but I thought I should post this because it's an important issue: suicide amongst teenagers.

Now most of those around my age or younger, I like to think of us as the "Youtuber-Generation"; there are many Youtubers that are popular like Joe Nation and Brittini Louise Taylor. One of my favorites is Shane Dawson. I do have to admit some of his language is vulgar, but hey who am I talk? I can have a bit of a dirty mouth sometimes too, like others around my age (FYI Shane's like a year older than me). Recently, he has posted a vlog on Youtube on one of his channels. His message in the vlog is to stay strong (and this is for anyone) and don't try to kill yourself. Yeah, life can get hard, but there's more to life than being bullied and thinking your life sucks. He states how when he was a kid in middle school and high school how he used to get tormented by others. I myself have experienced bullying from others; I used to get picked on because of how slow it would take me to read a book that others could read faster and they would pick on me because I had a little bit of a speech impediment (which I still have today, but I have under more control).

No matter how different you are, whether people like you are not, you shouldn't end your life because they mock you because of your differences. Our differences are what makes us unique from one another. Like Shane Dawson, I advise all you to find something you enjoy doing and just pursue in it; that may be your purpose of living, to bring what you do best to the world. In Shane's words, "You never know where life's going to take you. You never know where you're gonna go. But you'll never be able to find out if you end it." This is well said. If you would like to view this vlog, go to http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OiBML7eyKDs, or watch it at the end of this blog.

Hipsy's View: John Malkovich

This is my first view on an actor, and is more than likely not the last.

John Malkovich, in my opinion, is one of the greatest actors known in today's entertainment society. Every character he brings to life is unique in its own way. One of my favorite characters Malkovich help bring to the movie screen was a character named Lenny. Lenny is a character from a book by John Steinbeck called Of Mice and Men. Lenny is mentally disabled, due to kick in the head by a horse when he was young. He's a big man who is more like child in his own way. In 1992, Malkovich starred in the the movie Of Mice and Men, along side with Gary Sinise (who also directed the movie). Just look at the video clip from the movie (the link after this paragraph) to see Malkovich's performance; those that have read the book may agree with me that his performance was great. http://movieclips.com/watch/of-mice-and-men-1992/lennies-dead-mouse/

One the thing I love about Malkovich's performances and portrayals is that he makes the viewers believe in the characters; the characters become real to us. We feel what we are suppose to: we feel fear for him and Mary in the movie Mary Reilly when he plays Dr. Jekyll/Mr. Hyde; we feel sympathy and remorse for him in The Man in the Iron Mask because of how he lost his son Raul; we don't like him when he plays the bad guy on Eragon. These are just some of his characters! The main point I'm trying to show is that he is an exceptional actor whose portrayal of so many characters amazes me that I can't help but what to watch the movies he is in over and over again. If I ever had the chance to meet him in person, I would consider it an honor and a privilege to meet someone with great talent such as his.

Hipsy's View: Joy n' The Rhythm System

If you are into the sounds of Alanis Morissette, KT Tunstall, Lee Safar, and Brandi Carlile, then I would recommend this band. Joy n' Rhythm System is an Indonesian Pop/ Indie Rock band that sounds amazing. Being a person that grew up listening to Morissette and Tunstall, along with bands like Creed, Matchbox 20, and Three Doors Down, I could certainly say this band is certainly within it's age group. In my opinion, music like this would be better to listen to than to heavy metal and Screamo*.
The band's single "Where Do I Go?" is very good, plus it carries an important message that is pointed out many times through songs, movies, and books: when we have lost someone dear to us (either through death or choosing a different lifestyle), we feel lost. Where do we go when we've ended a relationship with someone who we thought was the one? Where do we go when our closest friends move away to start a new life when we have stayed in the place we began? Where do we go when our loved ones have past away, leaving us feeling empty inside and unable to cope with life after they are gone? The message I get from the song though, is that things like this happen in life, and we will question ourselves and wonder which road to take after something like this has happen. But it is our decision, and whether we choose the right or wrong thing, it's something we will have to carry with us for the rest of our life.

But either than my personal view on the message behind the band's song, I find it be very good. It's certainly a song someone would be able to sing along to when they've listened to it over and over again. If you like any of the singers or bands I've stated within this blog, I would advice you to give Joy n' Rhythm System a listen.

*I am sorry if I have offended anyone with this comment, but this is blog, thus my opinion. And in my opinion, I'd rather hear instruments played the way they were meant to be played and I'd like to hear what the vocalist is singing instead of being yelled at throughout a whole song. There are only a few exceptions, but don't expect me to get into a debate about that with you.

Hipsy's View: Paul Butler

Of those who had read my blog on the band Ten Toes*, you know that I am a listener to new artists and music on reverbnation.com. The most recent musician I have been listening to is a man named Paul Butler, and I have to say, he has a style and sound of his own.
Paul is an unsigned musician at the moment and lives in Weston-Super-Mare, United Kingdom. His genre of music ranges in Folk, Country Rock, and Acoustic. He is definitely a musician you can call a "one-man show", mostly because he does most of the singing and instrument playing himself. If you would like to know more about him, go to the link posted down below, and give his music a listen.**
While listening to Paul's music, I feel a deep connection to the music. And I believe this is Paul's purpose; he wants the listeners to be connected to the lyrics. The tempo and rhythm of the guitar hooks the listener and takes hold of him/her. The lyrics are like the drug that someone takes in and lets it set within their bones. As you listen to the lyrics being whispered to you, you can't help but sing along with the musician and just watch the images the lyrics plant in your brain flash before your eyes.
This is another artist I can say is in my music library along with many other reverbnation artists. The song I recommend my viewers to listen to by Paul Butler is  Georgia Girl***.
Until next time, when I have chosen another topic for you all, enjoy reading my views and please feel free to leave comments (and not rude ones!) and become one of my followers. Thank you for reading my blog.
Hispy.

Hipsy's View: Another Reason for Helen leaving with Paris?

Ok, I don't mean to seem obsessed with this Illiad topic, but I couldn't resist this one. My mother and I were talking about it just the other day, and I just can't get it out of my head. So maybe writing it down may help.

Now I know of two versions of how Paris brought Helen to Troy: 1) He brought her by force and so the Greeks were fighting to save her. And 2) Helen went on her own accord with Paris because she loved him. But after reading Book IV of the Odyssey, I saw Helen seemed quite faithful to Menelaus. This brings me to a possible third way of Helen's reason of leaving Sparta for Troy:

We know that Aphrodite promised Paris the most fairest and beautiful woman on earth if he chose her as the most beautiful goddess and not Hera or Athena. We also know Paris took Aphrodite's offer. Here's how I see: Helen may have loved Menelaus, and was happy. Aphrodite saw Helen was the most beautiful and fairest woman considered on earth, but also noticed that she was happily married. Aphrodite may have not liked Troy like Hera and Athena didn't, or it was just fate for Troy to fall, but Aphrodite was also a part of the construction of destroying Troy. Seeing how Helen was married, and wanting to keep a promise to Paris (or create chaos), Aphrodite sent her son Eros (Cupid) down to Earth to strike Helen with a love-struck arrow. After this was done, and Helen went with Paris to Troy, the battle began.

Now there have been in some Greek stories that the love sick feelings sometimes fade away, and I believed this happened to Helen. In Book IV of the Odyssey, she states in lines 288-296 how she was happy to see Odysseus and other Greeks in the city of Troy:
"The rest of the Trojan women shrilled their grief. Not I: / my heart leapt up--my heart had changed by now--I yearned / to sail back home again! I grieved too late for the madness / Aphrodite sent me, luring me there, far from my dear land, / forsaking my own child, my bridal bed, my husband too, / a man who lacked for neither brains not beauty." ll 291-296
Now either she is a good liar, or Helen was telling the truth. That is how I view a possible third version of how Helen came to be with Paris.

Hipsy's View: The Illiad

Note: This blog contains spoilers to the movie Troy and the epic poems The Illiad and the Aeneid. If you have not seen the movie or read the poems, and do not want to know the endings or any specific details, I advise you not to read this. But if you don't mind, then carry on and read my blog.

Most of us have seen the movie Troy, which is based on Homer's epic poem The Illiad, and know how it ends: The Greeks invade Troy by hiding in a wooden horse, which was a false offering of peace to the Trojans and was brought into to the city; Briseis killed Agamemnon; Paris, Helen, Hector's wife and child, Priam, and many other Trojans escaped the attack by a hidden door in the palace; and Achilles is killed by an arrow shot through his tendon (the one named after him). But when reading The Illiad, we see none of this; instead, we see the burial of Hector. The ending of Troy is more based on what is read in the Aeneid by the Roman poet Virgil.  But instead of seeing the ending of the movie, think of the ending of this tale like this: Helen and Menelaus go back to Sparta as though nothing happened; Andromache, Hector's wife is enslaved and his son Astyanax is thrown off the highest tower of Troy by Greek soldiers because they were afraid of what he would grow up to be as a man; and Agamemnon was murdered by wife. This just a taste of how Hollywood "enhances" an epic tale in order to gain others' attention to the the story.

Like many others, I watched the movie before reading the Illiad, and as usual, the written part of the story was far more better than the movie based on it. In the movie, the battle of Troy is fought and won within almost a year, whereas in the poem, the war has been going on for almost ten years. The movie shows Hector as a strong and good man, which he is, but they neglect to show his arrogance and how his prideful ego brought him to his death. The movie did well showing a little bit of Achilles' vulnerable side, but in my opinion, they could have gone deeper; in it, you see how Achilles is considered almost godlike and is known for his passion to fight and be in war. The poem shows this, but it also shows how he is human, and he does have feelings that can be broken, just like other human beings. The portrayal of Agamemnon was dead on; Agamemnon was power hungry, and greedy. Briseis was barely mentioned in the poem, same with Paris and Helen. If you read the true story and not watched the movie, you would certainly have a different point of view of how it was told.

There were so many differences between the movie and the poems. But either than that, they all gave a story to the audience that will entertain us for generations to come. If the story has been around since before Christ, it is more than likely going to be told after our time has come to an end.

Hipsy's View: Ten Toes

Over the weekend I received a message in my Reverbnation inbox from a blogger named the Dirty Rooster (http://thedirtyrooster.blogspot.com/), advising me to check out a band named Ten Toes,  due to my profile showing I was a Norah Jones a fan.

Well, I certainly have to say this is a great, upcoming band. Their genre is Folk and 2-step. In my opinion they have a mixture of Florence + the Machine and Norah Jones. Their music draws you in with a catchy melody; you can't help but sway and sing along with the music.
If you or anyone you know is a fan of folk music and artists such as Ray LaMontagne, Norah Jones, and Sara Bareilles, then I certainly advise to check out this band.
The following link is to Ten Toes band's Reverbnation page, featuring their music:

What do you want me to view?

Ok, here's the deal. I will try my best to keep these blogs updated. I'll give you my views on music, books, videos, movies, art, and who knows, I'll probably throw in a website or two. But what would you like me to view for you? Leave me a comment to let me know.

The Raven by Edgar Allan Poe Reading 2022

Hello everyone! I have not forgotten this blog; I have a legit reason for not posting in such a long time. Since my last post, my job as an ...
